Thursday's home run salute: Donaldson's 481-footer, Stanton's laser

Thursday was a good day if you dig the long ball.

The day's blue ribbon went to Blue Jays third baseman Josh Donaldson, whose 481-foot home run was the majors' longest of the year, bettering the 477-foot shot that the Yankees' Alex Rodriguez sent into the Tropicana Field seats last week.

Donaldson, acquired in an offseason deal that sent Brett Lawrie to Oakland, has given Toronto solid bang for the buck in the early going, batting .339 with three home runs and 11 RBI. Lawrie has also given the A's good bang for the buck, but that's come more in the form of Lawrie's run-in with Royals shortstop Alcides Escobar a week ago and the ensuing beanball war that followed.

Another impressive home run was hit Thursday by Marlins $325 million outfielder Giancarlo Stanton, who hit his fourth home run in seven games. The low liner he hit off Phillies reliever Justin De Fratus in the sixth inning left the crowd in Citizens Bank Park buzzing, adding just another indication of just how Herculean the 6-6, 240-pounder is.

Stanton is now hitting .241 with four home runs and 14 RBI in 16 games. He hit 37 homers a season ago, and that was with him missing the final three weeks of the season after taking a fastball to the jaw.
