Surgery a real possibility for Mesoraco

Devin Mesoraco hasn't caught in a month, but is hopeful that he may be able to catch soon.

“I guess I'm optimistic I will be able to catch in a relatively close amount of time,” Mesoraco told Reds.com. “I haven't done any catching drills for 30-some days. At some point I'll probably have to get some practice, get back there and get some work in. But I think at this point I'm going to be able to catch, or I'm going to get the surgery.”

Mesoraco has been sidelined with an impingement in his left hip, but has avoided the Disabled List and has been used as both a designated and pinch hitter.

However, Reds.com reported that Mesoraco plans to try to catch a bullpen session next week and the results of that could end up determining whether the catcher continues to rehab or if he has a surgery that will likely end his season.

“That's kind of my time,” Mesoraco said. “We have to see if it's going to work out. It's been over a month [since catching]. If it's going to work, it's going to happen at that time. If it isn't, we'll know at that time. At this point, it's time to figure it out.”
