Stanton sends ball where few have gone before (out of Dodger Stadium)

When it comes to prodigious blasts, Giancarlo Stanton likely has no peers in today's MLB. But the Miami Marlins star's latest mammoth home run has him sitting among some pretty elite company in baseball history.

Stanton on Tuesday night hit a home run completely out of Dodger Stadium, believed to be just the fifth ball to completely leave the 53-year-old park. Stanton's first-inning blast off Dodgers starter Mike Bolsinger was measured at a reported 478 feet, bouncing off the top of the roof of the left-field pavilion then bouncing out to the parking lot.

It was the longest home run in the majors this season, surpassing Alex Rodriguez's 477-foot shot April 17 at Tropicana Field.

"He's hit a couple like that in batting practice and man, he hammered that thing," Marlins manager Mike Redmond told The Associated Press. "I just wish we could've tacked on a few more."

Indeed, the Marlins could have used a few more . . . and then some. The Dodgers scored the game's next (and final) 11 runs for an 11-1 win. Andre Ethier did not hit a ball out of Dodger Stadium, but he did send one of his five base hits into the seats.

The last player to clear the stadium was current Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire, as a member of the St. Louis Cardinals back in 1999. There have actually been only four players to do it; Willie Stargell did it twice within a four-year span.
