Sources: Shields on Rangers' radar

Published Jul. 31, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

The Rays and Rangers have had discussions on a trade involving James Shields, major-league sources told FOXSports.com.

Shields is expendable because of Tampa Bay's pitching depth, while the Rangers would like to upgrade their rotation given injuries to Colby Lewis and Neftali Feliz and the poor performance of Roy Oswalt.

The two teams have met in the first round of the American League playoffs in each of the past two seasons, with the Rangers winning both times en route to the World Series.
