The Baltimore Orioles have made "significant progress" in their effort to sign first-round draft pick Kevin Gausman and a deal is expected before today's deadline, a major league source told FOXSports.com.
The recommended signing bonus for Gausman’s draft slot is $4.2 million. The agreement is likely to be “around” that number, the source said. Gausman, the fourth overall selection from Louisiana State, is the highest remaining unsigned pick from this year’s draft.
The New Orleans Times-Picayune reported earlier this week that Gausman, a right-handed pitcher, was "seriously considering" a return to LSU. That strategy carries substantial risk, particularly with the more restrictive rules on draft spending under the new collective bargaining agreement.
