The guarantee is the largest ever for a starting pitcher. It matches the contract given to Brewers right-hander Yovani Gallardo for the largest guarantee for a pitcher with less than three years of service, excluding foreign pitchers such as Dice-K Matsuzaka and Jose Contreras.

Romero, 25, has made 52 career starts, going 22-16 with a 3.94 ERA. He is 3-6 with a 6.99 ERA against the Yankees and Red Sox, 19-10 with a 3.17 ERA against all other opponents.

The contract will run from 2011-15.
