Snapped scoreless streak narrowly beat '13 run, but can't touch '43
The St. Louis Cardinals pitching staff needed two more outs Sunday against the Milwaukee Brwers to extend its shoutout streak to 40 consecutive innings, but it wasn't meant to be.
Starter John Lackey gave up a home run in the bottom of the third inning to snap the impressive streak that went back to the fourth inning against the Reds on Aug. 5, and included three consecutive shutouts.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, the streak eclipsed the one in 2013 by one out. However, it missed securing a franchise record. That distinction belongs to the 1943 team that went 42 innings without allowing a run.
The Brewers' Elian Herrera hit the homer that ended the streak.
The Cards allowed two runs in the bottom of the eight inning in their 5-4 that prevented a sweep of the Brewers, so they won't be able to start a new streak until Tuesday when the red-hot Pittsburgh Pirates arrive at Busch Stadium for a big three-game series.
