Seattle picks up $7 million option on OF Seth Smith

SEATTLE (AP) The Seattle Mariners have picked up the $7 million option on outfielder Seth Smith for the 2017 season, while declining the option on catcher Chris Iannetta.
The Mariners also reinstated Nathan Karns from the 60-day disabled list Thursday and saw outfielder Nori Aoki be claimed off waivers by Houston.
Smith has been a key contributor in his two seasons since arriving from San Diego. Smith hit .249 with 15 doubles, 16 home runs and 63 RBIs in 137 games with Seattle this season. He was supposed to be in a platoon situation when the season began but was pressed into more regular action as the season progressed and Seattle pushed for a playoff berth.
Iannetta struggled offensively, hitting just .210 with seven homers and 24 RBIs in 94 games. Iannetta played in 70 games before the All-Star break but was rarely used during the second half of the season.
