The San Diego Padres secured a part of their future Saturday, signing center fielder Cameron Maybin to a five-year, $25 million extension with an option for a sixth year.
The deal covers Maybin's final pre-arbitration season, his three arbitration years and his first free-agent year, with the Padres retaining the option to keep him for his second free-agent year as well.
Maybin, who turns 25 on April 4, played regularly for the first time last season after joining the Padres in a trade from the Marlins.
He batted .264/.323/.393 with nine home runs, 40 RBI and 40 stolen bases in 48 attempts.
