Rumors: Los Angeles Angels looking To Add Chase Utley
The Los Angeles Angels roster currently sits at 39 players. Meaning there’s room for one more key player to help the Angels in 2017.
The Los Angeles Angels rumors are coming in slow and somewhat mild. The most noteworthy rumor thus far is that the Angels are looking to add Chase Utley to the roster.
The rumor about Utley is from Jon Heyman via Twitter. He has also tweeted that the Angels checked in on Justin Turner from the Dodgers as well.
While the Angels signing Turner is a “major long shot” according to Heyman, the Utley signing could very well happen.
The Angels have the money and are in desperate need of a second baseman. Angels GM Billy Eppler has stated he wants an “everyday second baseman”. However, there’s no real guarantee that Utley fits that description.
More from Halo Hangout
Last season, Utley appeared in 138 games, scoring 79 runs, and 52 RBI’s. By those numbers, Utley could prove serviceable to the Angels.
One major drawback to this would be his age, Utley is 37. The Pasadena native is likely to stay in California, either with the Dodgers or Angels.
There are still some appealing free agents left in the league. Billy Hamilton is being looked at by the Texas Rangers, Andrew McCutchen is being courted, and the Edwin Encarnacion saga continues. It’s unlikely the Angels will make a big splash in free agency.
There is still no word on whether or not the Angels will retain Jered Weaver or Jhoulys Chacin, both of whom are free agents. It’s unlikely they’ll bring Weaver back for a major contract. If they do, I highly doubt he would start.
The Angels will probably be linked to more trades and rumors before settling on a specific deal. Remember, this team didn’t pull the trigger on the trade deadline until the very last minute. Stay with Halo Hangout for the latest.
