There might not be a more iconic way of being memorialized in California than through a freeway. On Thursday the California state assembly unanimously passed a bill to name a portion of Interstate 15 in San Diego County after Tony Gwynn. The state senate and the governor must approve it before it becomes official.

The Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway would be a 5-mile stretch of the 15 near Poway, the city which Gwynn called home for many years. Poway has been working on a memorial at a local park for Gwynn.

A section of freeway in the area is already named for another legendary major leaguer to come out of San Diego: Ted Williams. The Tony Gwynn Memorial Freeway would actually intersect with the Ted Williams Parkway.
