Report: Perez had pot in his house

New details have emerged about the evidence against Cleveland Indians closer Chris Perez and his wife Melanie, who are facing misdemeanor drug charges following a sting operation executed by police last month.

The Plain Dealer in Cleveland reported Wednesday that authorities seized two marijuana pipes, a bong and a small amount of the drug during their search on June 4, citing an inventory filed in Rocky River Municipal Court. In addition, the paper reported that police recovered two Ziploc bags containing marijuana roaches, as well as two metal grinders used to break down the plant’s buds and other paraphernalia.

The items were seized after an undercover officer delivered two packages containing most of the drug on June 4. Police were initially alerted after postal inspectors detected the smell of marijuana coming from packages addressed to the Perez house and opened them and discovered the drug. From there, police resealed the package, addressed to the family dog Brody, and delivered it using an undercover officer posing as a postal worker.

The couple has been charged with drug abuse, a fourth-degree misdemeanor. They each face a maximum of 30 days in jail and a $250 fine if convicted. Each has pleaded not guilty and they are due back in court on Sept. 3.
