Red Sox-Indians opener postponed because of cold weather

CLEVELAND (AP) The Indians have postponed their season opener against the Boston Red Sox because of cold weather.

With temperatures in the 30s, the team decided it was too frigid for the teams to play. The postponement was announced roughly two hours before the scheduled first pitch. There were thousands of fans huddled outside the gates in winter gear waiting to get into Progressive Field when the game was postponed.

The opener will be made up on Tuesday with the first pitch scheduled for 1:10 p.m.

Earlier, Cleveland manager Terry Francona said ''we're going to play'' when asked if the team had a contingency plan for the unseasonable weather. However, with the forecast calling for colder weather, the Indians decided to make the change.

The last time the Indians postponed their season opener was in 2007, when an entire four-game series against Seattle had to be rescheduled.
