Pirates' Polanco improving defensively

Gregory Polanco is gaining confidence in right field and Pirates manager Clint Hurdle is taking notice.

"That's a big-time play," Hurdle told the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette in reference to Polanco's catch while crashing into the right field wall.

Polanco is a very gifted athlete, but going back on balls has been troublesome for him.

However, he's worked on it and Hurdle certainly sees improvment.

“Earlier in his career, going to that wall wasn’t a strength,” Hurdle said. “The wall was a challenge, and it has been a challenge through the minor leagues — any wall, wherever he’s played.

“Now he’s got his steps down. He knows when he gets to that track what kind of room he’s got left. He’s shown the ability to do that. This is a young man that still has things to work on. To finish them off up here are not easy, but it can be done.”
