Pedroia's knee injury only a bruise

Published Jun. 9, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Boston Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia has a bone bruise on his right kneecap and was out of action for Thursday night's rain-delayed game at Yankee Stadium.

Pedroia was examined in Boston by team doctor Thomas Gill. The 2008 AL MVP has been bothered by a sore knee and left the team after playing in Wednesday night's 11-6 win over New York. Manager Terry Francona had said he expected Pedroia would play Friday night at Toronto.

The team originally feared that he would require surgery that would keep him out of the lineup for at least a month.

Pedroia said he suffered the injury May 16 against Baltimore when he landed hard on his right knee while fielding a ground ball that had deflected off pitcher Daisuke Matsuzaka.

The 27-year-old, three-time All-Star has struggled this season, hitting just .247 with a .338 on-base percentage, well below his career averages of .299/.369.

Pedroia is also feeling the effects of his surgically repaired left foot, an injury that forced him to miss nearly all of the final three months of last season.

Red Sox shortstop Jed Lowrie returned to the lineup for the first time since Sunday. He'd been sidelined by a sore left shoulder.
