Padres 5, Indians 3

Chris Young had his second straight solid start in his comeback from a shoulder injury in the San Diego Padres' 5-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Sunday.

Young, whose season ended in June last year, allowed five hits and two runs over 3 2-3 innings.

A healthy Young is penciled in as San Diego's No. 1 starter.

``I liked Chris' increased stamina,'' said Padres manager Bud Black. ``His pitch count was in the mid-60s, his fastball was consistently in the high 80s, which is good for him at this time of year, and he had his best stuff in his last 20 pitches.

``He used all his pitches - fastball, curve, slider and change, especially working on the slider. He got a lot accomplished.''

Indians starter Aaron Laffey got the first two outs in his scheduled third inning of work, then things fell apart. He was touched for two walks, two doubles and four two-out runs.

``I just lost my control in that inning,'' Laffey said. ``I wasn't in the zone. Everything I threw was down. I was scheduled to go three, and I wanted to finish it, but my pitches were dying, and I can't tell you why.''

Adrian Gonzalez started San Diego's two-out rally with a walk. He went to third on a double by Kyle Blanks and scored on a wild pitch. Chase Headley walked and Jerry Hairston Jr. doubled home two runs.

Hector Rondon replaced Laffey and was touched for an RBI triple by Nick Hundley.

``I had two good innings, and I want to build on that,'' Laffey said. ``Physically, I feel great, but in that third inning, the ball didn't feel right coming out of my hand.''

Blanks and Hundley each had two hits for the Padres. Jhonny Peralta hit a solo homer off Young to start the third inning.
