Orioles put Britton in Hammel's place in rotation

Published Jun. 17, 2013 7:33 p.m. ET

The Baltimore Orioles are planning to start left-hander Zach Britton in place of ailing right-hander Jason Hammel on Tuesday night against the Detroit Tigers.

Baltimore manager Buck Showalter says he doesn't expect Hammel's illness to be serious enough to put him on the disabled list. Hammel is 7-4 with a 5.24 ERA this season.

The Orioles sent Britton to Triple-A Norfolk after he gave up six runs in six innings of a loss to Seattle on April 29, his only start this year for them. He is 16-15 with a 4.85 ERA in two-plus seasons with the Orioles.
