NLCS smack-talk begins

Published Oct. 8, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

Milwaukee's Zack Greinke has added some fuel to an already-heated rivalry with St. Louis, saying a day before Game 1 of the NL championship series that the Brewers don't really like Cardinals ace Chris Carpenter because of his ''phony attitude.''

It was a surprising comment from Greinke, whose bouts with social anxiety disorder make him one of the more subdued players in a Brewers clubhouse filled with big personalities. But the sentiment isn't surprising.

Brewers rabble-rousing center fielder Nyjer Morgan got in a heated confrontation with Carpenter late in the regular season — yet another sign that the two NL Central rivals don't like each other much.

Cardinals manager Tony La Russa called Greinke's comments Saturday very disappointing. He said the Brewers would take Carpenter on their team in a minute.
