Mariners left-hander Cliff Lee got through a light workout Wednesday without pain, but is still likely to start the season on the disabled list because of a strained abdomen.

"It went good. I don't feel anything," Lee said. "It was pretty light, but I'm pleased with how I feel."

While the Mariners have yet to announce that the 2008 Cy Young Award winner will start the season on the DL, Lee mentioned it.

"I'm not happy about being hurt and going to start on the DL," Lee said, "but I've got to make the best of it and make sure I be smart and do everything to get back."

Lee threw off flat ground Wednesday. It was the first time he has thrown since being shut down last Thursday because of pain in his side.

Lee started the 6-minute session throwing off one knee, then stood up to play catch from about 60 feet. He threw out of a half windup. His rehabilitation from the injury, which he suffered March 15 in a spring training game, has included exercises in a pool.

"Just to be safe," Lee said. "It's a strange injury. You really don't know where you're going to be until you throw. I do probably 15 or 20 different exercises in the water, rotational stuff, and I feel absolutely nothingJust for whatever reason, throwing is the only thing that I really felt it with."

Notes: The Mariners placed a 15-day disabled list designation for LHP Erik Bedard and infielder Jack Hannahan on the DL, both retroactive to March 26. ... P Luke French was optioned to AAA Tacoma and P Chad Cordero was reassigned to minor-league camp.
