Matz dominates, Mets beat Cubs 8-1 in final spring tuneup

LAS VEGAS (AP) Steven Matz didn't allow a run over five hitless innings and Yoenis Cespedes hit his first spring homer to lead the New York Mets past the Chicago Cubs 8-1 Friday and end a 14-game winless streak in their last exhibition game.

The Mets open the regular season at Kansas City on Sunday night.

Matz struck out six and allowed two walks while lowering his spring ERA to 4.94.

Ty Kelly hit a three-run homer in the eighth and Eric Campbell and T.J. Rivera each hit solo homers in the ninth for New York.

The Cubs had just three hits and scored their run on John Andreoli's bases-loaded walk in the sixth. Jason Hammel started and allowed two runs (one earned) over four innings.

Chicago plays its final exhibition game Sunday at the Los Angeles Angels.
