Longtime Braves scout announces retirement

The Atlanta Braves have announced the retirement of long-time scout and front-office executive Dick Balderson.

Balderson retires after 16 seasons in the Atlanta organization, the last decade as a major league scout and special assistant to general manager Frank Wren.

Wren announced Tuesday that Balderson would be replaced by Jeff Schugel, who has spent the last seven seasons working as a scout for the Los Angeles Angels.

Braves president John Schuerholz hired Balderson with the Kansas City Royals in the 1970s. He also held front-office posts with the Seattle Mariners, Chicago Cubs and Colorado Rockies before being reunited with Schuerholz in Atlanta before the 1998 season.
