JETER KEEPS ADDING TO PLAYOFF RECORDS

YANKEES NOTES

Derek Jeter would likely point to it being about longevity more than anything else, but the 586 post-season at-bats he has are impressive.

First, they are the most in baseball history. Second, they are more than the Expos/Nationals franchise. They were more than the Rangers until Texas collected 38 at-bats in last night's 8-0, Game 3 rout of the Yankees to pass Jeter with 603.

The Expos/Nationals have 319 post-season at-bats and are no threat to pass Jeter anytime soon.

Jeter, who went 0-for-4 and fanned three times, passed Manny Ramirez for the all-time record of ALCS games played with 50.

*** Yankees relievers started last night's game having allowed one earned run and fanned 17 in 16 postseason innings. That fell apart when Boone Logan and David Robertson combined to surrender six runs and six hits during the ninth inning.

*** Hal Steinbrenner met with manager Joe Girardi yesterday, but Girardi kept the details of the chat private.

"We had a good conversation," Girardi said. "We talked about the state of the club, which we always do."

Steinbrenner was not in Texas for the first two games of the ALCS.

*** Josh Hamilton is playing with broken ribs on his left side, but that has not reduced the respect the Yankees have for the left-handed slugger, who clubbed a two-run homer off Andy Pettitte in the first inning.

"You have to pitch careful to Josh - we all know the numbers he put up against right-handers," Girardi said of Hamilton, who batted .401 (141-for-352) with 24 homers and 77 RBIs against right-handed pitchers during the regular season. "He hit over .400 from June to August and those three months are probably as good as any player has ever had. You have to be careful."

*** Tino Martinez threw out the ceremonial first pitch last night. Yogi Berra, who did the honors for Game 3 of the ALDS against the Twins, also was on hand.

There was a mini-reunion of ex- Yankees on the field before the game when Reggie Jackson, Paul O'Neill, Tom Gordon and Jeff Nelson milled about.

*** Rangers manager Ron Washington started righty-hitting Jorge Cantu at first base in Game 1 against lefty CC Sabathia. In Game 2, he went with the lefty-hitting Mitch Moreland against right-hander Phil Hughes. Last night in Game 3 against lefty Andy Pettitte, Moreland was the call.

"I chose Moreland simply because of the at-bats he has given me, how he has been hanging in there," Washington said of his No. 9 hitter, who went 1-for-4 with two RBIs last night after going 2-for-3 with an RBI in the Game 2 victory.
