Japan defeated Taiwan 9-2 on Saturday in a charity baseball game on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Kenta Kurihara hit a two-run homer in the third inning to give Japan a comfortable 4-1 lead.

Naoto Watanabe and Takahiro Arai drove in two more runs on sacrifice flies in the fourth and fifth innings. Sho Nakata had a two-run single in the sixth when Japan scored three more runs to put the game out of reach.

Proceeds from the game will be donated to disaster-hit areas. More than 12,000 survivors of the disaster attended Saturday's game at Tokyo Dome.
