Jackson to have utility role for Boston

Published Aug. 31, 2011 1:00 a.m. ET

The Red Sox acquired outfielder/first baseman Conor Jackson from the Athletics just before Wednesday’s midnight EST deadline to set postseason rosters.

Jackson had a .658 OPS for Oakland this season, while spending most of his time as a right-handed-hitting reserve option at first base and the corner outfield spots. One source said Jackson will have a “super utility” role in Boston.

Jackson’s numbers against right-handers and left-handers this season have been roughly equivalent. Boston’s starting outfield — Carl Crawford, Jacoby Ellsbury and Josh Reddick — is entirely left-handed.

Oakland received Class AAA right-handed reliever Jason Rice from Boston in the deal.
