Hammel to have shoulder surgery

Published Jul. 15, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

Orioles right-hander Jason Hammel will undergo arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to be out for at least 3-4 weeks.

Baltimore placed Hammel on the 15-day disabled list Sunday. He says he will have the operation Monday in Baltimore.

Hammel (8-2, 3.54 ERA) leads Baltimore in wins and strikeouts (106). His knee has been bothering him since May, but the injury became more serious Friday night when he was forced to leave a game against Detroit after throwing a pitch in the fourth inning.

He was previously given extra rest between starts, and an extended rest was an option instead of surgery. But Hammel opted to get rid of the problem instead of wait it out.

He says, ''I just want my knee to feel normal again.''
