Dodgers fire Steve Garvey

Dodgers great Steve Garvey openly called for owner Frank McCourt to give up the team, hours after he was fired from his role with the franchise, apparently because of his efforts to buy the club.

Garvey, a 10-time All-Star and former MVP first baseman, confirmed to the Los Angeles Times that he was removed from his part-time role in marketing and community relations Friday.

Garvey previously said that he put together a group, including fellow former Dodger Orel Hershiser, to buy the financially-stricken franchise.

He denied Friday that he strayed from the "parameters" agreed with the team not to criticize McCourt while promoting his own potential takeover.

But now freed from the payroll, he said that it was time for McCourt to leave. "Under the circumstances, obviously it is," Garvey said, later adding, "It's time for a change."

The former World Series winner said that his exit did not affect his relationship with the team he represented from 1969 until 1982 before going on to spend 15 years in its front office.

"It doesn't take away from my love for the team," he said.
