Braves RHP Beachy leaves game with oblique injury

Published May. 14, 2011 2:00 a.m. ET

Braves right-hander Brandon Beachy left his start against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday night with an injury to his left side.

Beachy pulled up in obvious discomfort after making a warmup pitch before the third inning. The rookie was removed from the game after conferring on the mound with manager Fredi Gonzalez, pitching coach Roger McDowell and assistant trainer Jim Lovell.

The Braves were evaluating the severity of the injury.

Right-hander Cristhian Martinez replaced Beachy, who gave up six hits and three runs in two innings. Beachy allowed a three-run homer to Ryan Howard in the first inning.

Beachy began the night 1-1 with a 2.98 ERA in seven starts. He won the No. 5 spot in the rotation in a spring training competition with left-hander Mike Minor.

Minor and right-hander Rodrigo Lopez are the top candidates to be recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett if Beachy is placed on the disabled list.
