Braves place Moylan on DL, recall Asencio

Published Apr. 17, 2011 12:28 a.m. ET

The Atlanta Braves have placed right-hander Peter Moylan on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain, clearing a roster spot for Jair Jurrjens.

Jurrjens came off the disabled list to start in Saturday night's second game of a doubleheader against the New York Mets.

Earlier, the Braves recalled right-hander Jairo Asencio from Triple-A Gwinnett. Catcher J.C. Boscan was optioned to Gwinnett.

Asencio, formerly known as Luis Valdez, was 0-1 with a 3.38 ERA in three games with Atlanta in 2009. The native of the Dominican Republic was on the restricted list for the full 2010 season due to visa problems.

Boscan did not have a hit in his only at-bat with Atlanta after he was recalled from Gwinnett on April 8.

Moylan is 1-0 with a 4.15 ERA.

Manager Fredi Gonzalez says he has been giving Moylan extra rest as the right-hander has tried to pitch through the injury.
