Reliever Edward Mujica has been a much-needed reliable bullpen arm since joining the Oakland A's a few weeks back - but now they'll be without him for a bit.

In a circumstance that more or less defines the unlucky 2015 A's, Mujica left Thursday's loss to the Tampa Bay Rays with what would eventually be announced as a thumb fracture. Despite it all, however, Mujica showed some serious toughness on the mound after suffering the injury.

A line drive off the bat of Bobby Wilson in the seventh inning ricocheted off Mujica's hand, but he was able to recover the ball and throw it to first base for the out. That's where things get gruesome. As beat writer Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle found out later, the incident was quite messy for first baseman Max Muncy:

Mujica needed stitches to repair the wound. Said A's starter Jesse Chavez (whose string of bad luck resulted in another loss for him on Thrusday despite pitching quite well) to Slusser: “That’s just our season. We lost a guy who’s been tremendous for us, a leader in the bullpen, for some unfortunate reason, this happened. That’s the way our season has been going. We just have to show up, turn the page, have a new mind-set.”

Despite the setback, Mujica might not miss too much time:
