Should Broncos kicker Brandon McManus transition to punter?

Published Jun. 23, 2015 11:05 p.m. ET

Denver ended its 2014 season with three kicking specialists on the roster.

Gary Kubiak has made it known he won't carry that number this season. So, any specialist who can kick and punt -- like Brandon McManus can -- would be extra valuable in the eyes of his first-year head coach.

McManus arrived in Denver last season in a trade from the New York Giants. But in a past life, the kicker punted -- and punted pretty well -- in college at Temple University.

According to Predominantly Orange, McManus' per-punt average actually eclipses Britton Colquitt's numbers from the last two seasons. Kubiak could make a move for a stronger-legged player with incumbent kicker Connor Barth struggling on kickoff duty.

McManus would need to edge out another versatile kicker in Karl Schmitz. The YouTube sensation is a quality punter who can also boot 60-yard field goals.

Kubiak is still in a wait-and-see mode. Schmitz is talented, but he could be edged out in favor of a more reliable NFL veteran like McManus.
