Warriors GM: Team unlikely to make move before trade deadline

The Golden State Warriors plan on standing pat for the upcoming NBA trade deadline on Feb. 18, as the front office wants to give the roster a fair shot at repeating as champions without disrupting team chemistry.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Warriors general manager Bob Myers says the Warriors have had “very, very, very low-level” conversations with teams to see what's available to them, but haven't engaged in any serious talks or targeted any players in particular:

“You have to respect what the team has done prior to making (trade) decisions, and we will,” Myers said. “Certainly our players deserve to have the opportunity to go try to win another championship. They’ve earned it.

“You’re cognizant of that and try to do things the right way, but that doesn’t mean you are closed for business.”

It's unclear who exactly the Warriors would trade.

Stephen Curry, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson are off-limits. Andre Iguodala and Andrew Bogut are probably not as valuable to suitors as they are to the Warriors. And Harrison Barnes and Festus Ezeli are bargains at their current prices, and are unlikely to be moved given their youth.

Shaun Livingston and Leandro are key backup pieces, so they're likely to remain, too. Brandon Rush, Marreese Speights and Jason Thompson are all expiring contracts who can moved in the right deal, but none have much trade value around the league. And for those clamoring for the team to move picks to win now, they can't. The Dubs already moved their 2017 first-round pick to the Utah Jazz, and don't own a second-round pick until 2019.

Basically, unless the perfect move comes along, the Warriors won't make a trade, anyway.

Myers sees internal improvement as the key to the Warriors' title defense. Golden State already has the deepest and most versatile team in the league. Team chemistry clearly isn't an issue. The Warriors can fine tune certain aspects on both ends, but for the most part this is their team -- and they're historically great:

“There are always areas to improve, but I’m not going to be very critical,” Myers said. “The coaching staff all thinks there is room for growth, and when you’re thinking along those lines and working toward it, usually you can.”

Most trades don't happen until around the deadline, so All-Star weekend (Feb. 12-14) will provide more insight on whether the Warriors will be in the hunt to make a move.
