Gentry: 'Too big a drop off' with bench unit for Pelicans

The reason that the Pelicans are 0-6 on the season is primarily due to injuries, but it's also directly related to the steep talent drop-off on the roster once you get past a few key players.

Head coach Alvin Gentry knows this, of course. But while he waits for the injured players who can help the most to return, he's doing his best to push the reserves to bring him a higher level of production.

New Orleans lost to the Mavericks this past Saturday, 107-98, at the American Airlines Center. The Pelicans backups were outscored by the Mavericks' reserves, 42-34. Only Ryan Anderson, Toney Douglas and Omer Asik scored off the bench for the Pelicans. Anderson scored 21.

''We're having too big of a drop off when we go to the bench in certain situations,'' Gentry said. ''Those are things that are a concern. We've got to find combinations of people that keep us there.''
