Zobrist could return to A's by next homestand
Ben Zobrist, who hasn't played in a game with the Oakland A's since injuring his knee on April 19th, could be back by Memorial Day.
According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Zobrist is recovering quickly enough that the club will send him out on a minor league rehab stint on Tuesday - something that would put him in line to be in the A's lineup on Monday, May 25 for their Memorial Day matchup with the Detroit Tigers.
This confirms the news from late last week that Zobrist was zeroing in on the chance of heading out on a rehab outing 'soon', and also implies that he would miss the A's four-game set with the Tampa Bay Rays - Zobrist's longtime club - from Thursday-Sunday of next week.
Slusser also notes that Zobrist's return creates some questions as to where he will play in the field. The A's already have Marcus Semien at shortstop every day (for better or worse), and second baseman Eric Sogard is off to a strong start by his own standards (.271/.289/.331). Will Zobrist just reclaim everyday second baseman duties, or will he rotate around the field as Bob Melvin sees fit? That's a decision the A's will have to make soon.
