Youkilis on DL with sore back
Red Sox third baseman Kevin Youkilis was placed on the 15-day disabled list to overcome a sore back, the Boston Globe reported Friday.
Manager Terry Francona said that Youkilis was examined after Wednesday's 4-0 defeat to the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, with a lower back strain diagnosed. Youkilis did not join the team in Kansas City, Mo., for the start of the four-game series with the Royals, which began Thursday night with a 4-3 win.
It was the latest physical problem in an injury-hit season for Youkilis, who has missed games because of trouble with his left shin, left hip, left ankle, upper back and right hamstring.
"His body was so beat up anyway," Francona said Thursday. "This was like the last straw. It just kind of put him over the edge. Hopefully, we can get him back and get him back feeling where he can be Youkilis."
Catcher Ryan Lavarnway was promoted to the Red Sox roster from Pawtucket in his absence. Youkilis was hitting .266 with 17 homers and 78 RBIs.
