Yanks' Girardi ejected for 1st time this season

Yankees manager Joe Girardi was angry second base umpire Vic Carapazza didn't ask for help on a close play and was ejected during an argument in New York's 4-1 win over Boston on Friday night.

Pitcher Jon Lester's throw to second on Ichiro Suzuki's fifth-inning comebacker was wide to the shortstop side of the base, and shortstop Stephen Drew had to stretch for it. Replays showed Drew kept his foot on the bag, the throw beat David Adams to the base and the forceout call was correct.

''I just wanted him to get help, just to ask. And he said he got a good look at it,'' Girardi explained. ''From my viewpoint, I thought he was off the bag. He was not. I was wrong. But all I wanted was to ask him to get help.''

Girardi continued to argue after the ejection and appeared to lightly bump crew chief Gary Cederstrom. It was New York's first ejection of the season. Girardi has been tossed 17 times as Yankees manager, 18 times overall with the Yankees, 19 times as a big league manager and 22 times total.

''I don't really understand why I got tossed,'' Girardi said after the victory, which stopped the Yankees' season-worst, five-game losing streak. ''I got a little upset after he tossed me. But all I asked was, `Just ask.' If you ask and they say he's out, I walk away.''

Girardi said he went out to argue at the urging of hitting coach Kevin Long.

''He said, `Go! Go! Go!'''

Will Girardi make Long pay the likely fine?

''It's probably not going to work,'' the manager said.
