Yankees sign former Red Sox

Published Mar. 26, 2013 1:00 a.m. ET

Though not quite on the order of Johnny Damon, Roger Clemens or Babe Ruth, another player has made the often irrevocable passage from one archrival to the next.

Tuesday morning, Lyle Overbay was released by the Boston Red Sox.

Tuesday afternoon, Overbay signed with the New York Yankees.

With that, Overbay became the latest veteran the Yankees have acquired this spring in an effort to stem the attrition of age and injuries. He joined the team on the same day the Yankees’ trade for outfielder Vernon Wells became official. The Yankees previously signed outfielder Brennan Boesch after the Tigers released him.

Overbay, 36, will give the Yankees another option to fill in for Mark Teixeira at first base. If he’s able to play first base, then Kevin Youkilis could (at least temporarily) move to third. Overbay had a .727 OPS with two home runs in 65 games between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Atlanta Braves last year.

The Yankees’ Opening Day disabled list is expected to include Teixeira, Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Michael Pineda. Starting pitcher Phil Hughes could join them, as well.
