Yankees place RHP Robertson on DL

Published May. 15, 2012 1:00 a.m. ET

The New York Yankees have placed reliever David Roberston on the 15-day disabled list with a strained muscle in his left ribcage.

Tuesday's move puts additional burden on a bullpen already without closer Mariano Rivera. Robertson finished five games this season and was 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA and one save.

With Rivera likely out for the season with a torn knee ligament, Robertson had been the fill-in closer. The right-hander had not pitched since Friday because of a discomfort in his ribcage, an injury diagnosed Tuesday as a strained oblique muscle.

Rafael Soriano, who earned a save Monday night in Baltimore, is expected to get most of the work as closer.

To fill out the bullpen, New York recalled right-hander Cody Eppley from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
