Yankees 1B Teixeira exits early

Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira left New York's game against the Los Angeles Angels in the fourth inning Saturday with an aggravated right wrist.

Teixeira, who missed the first 53 games of the season with an injury to the wrist, will be examined by Yankees team physician Dr. Christopher Ahmad in New York on Sunday, adding another worry to New York's injury-filled season.

"I've been concerned about it since he's come back, really, just because it was a tough injury that he had," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "You're never sure how it's going to hold up, or how it's going to react."

Although Teixeira is batting .151 this season, he was one of the few available veteran hitters in the Yankees' lineup, which has fallen apart with injuries. Alex Rodriguez, Derek Jeter, Curtis Granderson and Kevin Youkilis are all out.

"You're taking a switch-hitter out of the middle of your lineup," Girardi said. "I know his average wasn't great, but he had 12 RBIs in a short period of time, so that's hard to lose. But hopefully it's just a couple of days and we'll get him right back."

Teixeira flied out to right and fouled out to third before leaving Saturday's game. David Adams replaced him at first base.

Teixeira is hitless in his last 12 at-bats. He is just 8 for 53 since coming off the disabled list May 31, including a 4-for-35 slump on the Yankees' current road trip, which ends Sunday in Anaheim.

The $180 million slugger missed the first two months of the season with a torn sheath in his right wrist. He was hurt in early March while taking swings off a batting tee while training with the U.S. team for the World Baseball Classic.
