Win vs. Indians gives Tigers edge over Twins

Shortly before 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jamey Carroll's line drive ricocheted off the hind quarters of rookie phenom Rick Porcello.

Porcello is the Tigers' future — and their present. A mature 20-year-old. A Rookie of the Year candidate. A key member of their September rotation and one of the team's most consistent pitchers in recent weeks.

It was a heart-stopping moment for anyone in a gray uniform at Progressive Field.

Right?

"I wasn't too worried about it," Detroit manager Jim Leyland said. "I knew right away it didn't hit him in the arm — or someplace else real dangerous."

"I saw him wave the trainers back," second baseman Placido Polanco said. "I knew he was fine."

"He's a tough guy," Carlos Guillen observed.
