White Sox sign Pierzynski for two years

Published Dec. 2, 2010 12:00 a.m. ET

The Chicago White Sox didn't just reach agreement with free-agent slugger Adam Dunn on Thursday.

They also re-signed free-agent catcher A.J. Pierzynski to a two-year, $8 million contract, according to major-league sources.

For the White Sox, the dual signings marked a pivotal step. Both Dunn and Pierzynski are left-handed hitters, and the team had been trying to upgrade in that area.

The Los Angeles Dodgers also showed interest in Pierzynski, sources said. The Toronto Blue Jays were close to signing him according to one published report, but never actually were in the mix.

Pierzynski, who turns 34 on Dec. 30, declined offensively last season. Still, the White Sox value his durability and his work with their pitching staff.
