Wheel tough loss for Lugnuts
The Class-A Lansing Lugnuts celebrated a 5-4 victory over the Great Lakes Loons Monday night after outfielder Chris Hawkins hit a bases-loaded single with two outs in the ninth inning to drive home Dwight Smith for the winning run.
Problem is, the winning run didn’t count because Santiago Nessy, the runner on first, didn’t reach second base before joining in the celebration.
According to MLive.com, Great Lakes center fielder James Baldwin fielded the hit and, noticing that Nessy had never touched the bag, threw to second base. Infielder Kevin Taylor then stepped on the bag for a force-out to nullify Smith’s apparent game-winning run.
You can see the play in question below, and there’s no arguing that Nessy never reached second :
That’s an embarrassing enough mistake for a team to make, on its own. But it gets worse for the Lugnuts: They would go on to lose the game in 10 innings to fall to 2-9 in the second half of the Midwest League season.
