Waivers expire on Bell, who stays with Padres

Published Aug. 26, 2011 6:40 p.m. ET

The deadline for the Padres to work out a waiver trade with the San Francisco Giants for closer Heath Bell has passed without a deal.

The Giants claimed Bell off waivers on Wednesday. San Diego had 48 hours to decide whether to work out a trade for the three-time All-Star, allow him to be claimed or let waivers expire.

Nothing happened, so Bell remains with the Padres.

Also Friday, the Padres purchased the contract of infielder Andy Parrino from Double-A San Antonio to take the roster spot of infielder James Darnell, who was optioned to Triple-A Tucson on Wednesday night. The Padres also transferred left-hander Clayton Richard from the 15-day to the 60-day disabled list.

Parrino hit .315 with 12 home runs and 56 RBIs combined with San Antonio and Tucson. Darnell hit .200 with two RBIs in 10 games for San Diego.
