Upton sits one day after beaning

Arizona Diamondbacks right fielder Justin Upton was a late scratch from the lineup on Monday against Los Angeles, one day after he was hit in the helmet with a pitch.

Upton was penciled into manager Kirk Gibson's original lineup but was removed following after batting practice. Upton also underwent an impact test, whose results were compared to the baseline test taken of all players in spring training.

Diamondbacks officials said Upton's removal was for ''precautionary reasons'' and would not say if it was related to the impact test results.

Upton was hit above the brim of his helmet in the first inning Sunday by San Francisco's Tim Lincecum. He remained in the game and scored Arizona's second run before leaving the contest for precautionary reasons. Upton reported nausea running the bases but Arizona team physicians said the All-Star right fielder did not have even a headache after the game.

He is hitting .291 with 31 homers, 88 RBIs and 21 stolen bases for the NL West champion Diamondbacks.
