Umps say Black not timely enough; deny challenge

Published Apr. 3, 2014 2:19 a.m. ET

SAN DIEGO (AP) Padres manager Bud Black was denied the chance to challenge a play in the first inning Wednesday night because the umpires determined he wasn't timely enough.

It took Black several seconds to come out of the dugout after Yasiel Puig of the Los Angeles Dodgers laid down a sacrifice bunt and reached when pitcher Tyson Ross' throw pulled first baseman Yonder Alonso off the bag for an error.

Black said he was told that Ross had already gotten back on the rubber and Hanley Ramirez was in the batter's box.

Says crew chief Fieldin Culbreth: ''To me, at some point, we had gotten out of the range of what was timely.''

Says Black: ''Like I told those guys, I thought the message was to get the play right. I don't have a timer with me.''
