Top MLB investigations officials leaving

NEW YORK (AP) Two leaders of Major League Baseball's investigations unit are among five employees to leave following last year's drug inquiry that led to suspensions of 14 players.

Dan Mullin, the senior vice president of investigations, and George Hanna, the senior director of investigations, are among those departing. They were hired in 2008 following the recommendation by former Sen. George Mitchell that MLB start an investigations unit.

Also leaving the Department of Investigations are investigators Ed Dominguez and Thomas Reilly.

The department's initial focus concerned the use, possession and distribution of performance-enhancing drugs. MLB said Thursday the department is now handling ''wide-ranging areas'' and ''felt compelled to restructure in order to increase the effectiveness and efficiency of its investigative capabilities.''

The departures were first reported by The New York Times.
