Tigers' Inge lands on DL with mononucleosis

Published Jun. 3, 2011 7:48 p.m. ET

Detroit Tigers third baseman Brandon Inge was placed on the disabled list Friday with mononucleosis and catcher Omir Santos recalled from Triple-A Toledo.

Inge is hitting .211 with one homer and 12 RBIs in 52 games. The move is retroactive to June 2, though there is no timetable for his return.

Tigers manager Jim Leyland is unsure if Inge's illness has affected his play, saying: ''I don't think he's been himself for awhile, but I don't know if that has anything to do with it or not. I don't really understand.''

Santos hit .250 with two homers and eight RBIs in 18 games with Toledo. He will be in a reserve role for the Tigers, who go for its 10th straight win over the White Sox on Friday night.

Santos' stay with the club may be short if Magglio Ordonez returns from the disabled list on Monday. Ordonez has been out with weakness in his surgically repaired right ankle.
