Tigers call up Knebel to replace Smith

Published Jul. 19, 2014 2:04 p.m. ET

DETROIT (AP) The Detroit Tigers have recalled right-handed reliever Corey Knebel from Triple-A Toledo on Saturday.

Right-hander Chad Smith was optioned to Toledo after Friday night's game. The Tigers have also transferred right-hander Joel Hanrahan to the 60-day disabled list.

Knebel has allowed five runs and eight hits in 6 2-3 innings for the Tigers this season.

The Tigers signed Hanrahan around the beginning of May, hoping he could provide a boost for Detroit's bullpen at some point, but he's still working his way back after having elbow surgery in May 2013.
