Texas puts RHP O'Day on 60-day DL with hip injury

The Texas Rangers put relief pitcher Darren O'Day on the 60-day disabled list Wednesday with a partially torn labrum in his left hip that will require surgery.

O'Day pitched a scoreless ninth inning in Tuesday night's 10-3 loss to Toronto, but the decision was made after the game to shut down O'Day, one of the primary setup relievers in the Rangers' run to the AL championship last season.

''It's something that's been there for years, but he's been pitching with it,'' Rangers manager Ron Washington said. ''It got to the point where it was bothering him and we've got to do something about it.''

O'Day was in Nashville, Tenn., on Wednesday to be examined by Dr. Tom Byrd. He is scheduled for surgery on Thursday and will go on the disabled list for the first time in his career.

Texas purchased the contract of right-hander Ryan Tucker from Triple-A Round Rock.

O'Day is the third right-handed reliever to land on the disabled list this season, joining closer Neftali Feliz (right shoulder inflammation) and Mason Tobin (right ulnar collateral ligament inflammation).

O'Day is 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA in eight relief appearances this season.

Tucker has spent the season with Round Rock, going 1-1 with a 4.09 ERA in six appearances.

Feliz, who is eligible to return May 6, is doing light throwing and showing progress, and Washington said the move to the disabled list was mostly precautionary.

''He's much, much better,'' Washington said.

Washington said there are no plans to move right-hander Alexi Ogando from the rotation back to the relief role he filled last season. Ogando is 3-0 with a 2.13 ERA in four starts.

Next month, the Rangers will have right-handed starters Tommy Hunter and Scott Feldman returning from the DL, but Ogando has been the team's most effective starter this season.

''If he continues to pitch the way he has been pitching, I'm not taking him out of the rotation,'' Washington said. ''I'm not going to rob Peter to pay Paul.''
