Sources: Fister heading to Tigers

The Tigers have acquired right-handed pitchers Doug Fister and David Pauley from the Mariners, major-league sources confirmed to FOXSports.com.

One source said the prospect package going to Seattle will include left-handed pitcher Charlie Furbush and outfielder Casper Wells, both of whom have major-league experience this year, and Class AA third baseman Francisco Martinez.

The Tigers have been looking for starting pitching help for weeks leading up to Sunday’s non-waiver trade deadline. They checked into the top-of-the-market pitchers like Ubaldo Jimenez and Hiroki Kuroda but found the price on Fister to be more appealing.

One source said the Tigers are trying to make at least one more trade before the deadline.

Fister is just 3-12 this season despite a 3.33 ERA over 21 starts. He’s had success pitching at Safeco Field, which has dimensions similar to Detroit’s Comerica Park. A big part of Fister’s appeal is that he isn’t scheduled to become a free agent until after the 2015 season.

With the acquisition of Fister, the Tigers’ rotation will likely include Verlander, Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello, Fister and Brad Penny. Fister’s regular turn in the rotation falls on Sunday, but Verlander is scheduled to oppose Angels ace Jered Weaver that day in a matchup of American League Cy Young Award candidates.

The Tigers made another change to their rotation – if for one day only. Top prospect Jacob Turner has been summoned from Class AA to take Duane Below’s spot in the rotation for today’s game against the Angels.

Pauley is 5-4 with a 2.15 ERA in 39 appearances this season. But July has been his worst month this season, with a 5.06 ERA and .812 OPS. Pauley grew up in Colorado but lives in Sawyer, Mich., during the offseason.
