Sources: Cubs, Jackson agree to deal

This time, the Chicago Cubs got their man.

The Cubs, after getting shut out on Anibal Sanchez, reached agreement Thursday with free-agent right-hander Edwin Jackson on a four-year, $52 million contract, according to major-league sources.

The deal, which is pending a physical, gives the Cubs a workhorse who should help them short-term and still be effective in the latter part of his contract, when the team should be closer to contention.

The Cubs tried to get Sanchez last week, but were narrowly outbid by the Detroit Tigers, who re-signed the right-hander to a five-year, $80 million contract.

The Cleveland Indians also made a strong run at Jackson, who has averaged 199 innings over the past five seasons and produced an ERA-plus slightly above league-average (ERA-plus is ERA adjusted to a pitcher’s ballpark and league).

The Cubs already have remade their rotation by signing free-agent righties Scott Baker and Scott Feldman, and on Wednesday they reached agreement with righty Carlos Villanueva, who can start or relieve.
